The older housing stock in and around the town centre, much of it Victorian terrace and former carpet-mill workers' housing, typically has timber front doors that have been in place for decades. The mortice locks on these doors are often worn, with loose keys and cylinders that were never designed to resist modern attack methods. A door that lifts or drops on its hinges will eventually stop latching cleanly, and the lock takes the strain.
