The housing stock here splits fairly clearly into two groups, and each brings its own lock problems. The larger detached and semi-detached family homes that make up much of Solihull tend to have composite or timber front doors fitted with multi-point locking systems. When those fail, which they do, the fault is usually in the gearbox mechanism running up the door edge rather than the cylinder itself. uPVC doors are common too, particularly on houses built from the 1980s onwards, and their lock mechanisms wear out in a predictable way: the shootbolts stop engaging cleanly, the handle lifts but nothing moves, and the door either will not open or will not secure properly.
